Fix wrong network icon in windows 7

If your internet icon displays a red cross through it even when connected. Try this to fix the problem.

edit:You need to be on an admin account

Right click on the network icon and click “Open Network and Sharing Center”

You should now see this image:image

Click on “Change adapter settings”

image

You should now see:

If there are any more connections other than Local Area Connection (except wireless connections although they shouldn’t appear unless wireless is connected) delete them.

Then right click on the local area connection and click “properties” (requires elevated privileges).

Click “configure”

image

On the driver tab click update driver. Then click automatically search the internet.

Windows update will look for newer drivers.

If all goes well a later driver has been released and after updating (and possibly restarting) the problem will be fixed.

If you have any queries or think something needs clarifying please post a comment.

sry..It didnt work for me. Already Tried other steps too

I just went through these steps and it said I already have this installed on the computer. I keep loosing connection. Got this computer in October, Windows 7, not my choice, but all that is available, in May we started having connection issues. Old HP with Windows XP on same desk, always on the net, never an issue, checked with internet company, signal is strong here. Others come and are able to connect immediately.

We are so frustrated. Always have to turn off the net, wait 10 seconds, turn back on the internet, in 5 minutes you will be connected again, but will go off when you are on it, that is frustrating if you are paying a bill.

Is there any free help out there. Once I did get help with typing inc…, temp, %temp%, and prefetch in the run spot and had to do a restart 2 times, that helped for about 3 weeks, I thoght we had it fixed, now I do that all time and it does not stay on for even an hour.

Bought what I felt was a good protection plan at Best Buy, but of course not covered. I just don’t want to pay for a problem with Windows 7 when Windows 7 is not what I wanted.

I uninstalled all the drivers of the wired and wireless networks and installed them back and every this was fine :)

I found a solution that worked for me:

-At the bottom right of your computer, click on your wireless network icon, which brings up the list of networks your system sees.
-Right click on your “red X” network icon, drag down to properties & click on it.
-Select “Connection” tab at the top
*****uncheck the “Connect automatically when the network is in range” box.*************
    -Click “OK.”
-Go back down to your wireless network icon & click it to get a list of the networks & click on your network….it should now work!!
-Right click on it, go to properties, click the connect tab & ****now, re-select the “connect automatically box,” the click ok.
It appears that the “connect automatically” retains settings, so if they are now incorrect, no matter home many times you reconfigure, it would automatically use the old settings. I hope this is helpful. Merry Christmas!!

Didn’t work for me I’m afraid!

  • Brendan van Hemert

For those of you who it says driver already up to date, click uninstall instead of update driver, don’t tick the remove drivers box, restart computer it will find the drivers and reinstall automatically, works fine.
    Brendan.

Thanks, worked for me. I had a third connection named “Incoming Connection” that was somehow created and not in use. I deleted it, leaving “Local Area Connection” and “Bluetooth Network Connection”. I rebooted, and now the red x is gone and all works perfectly.
