One of my favourite websites, being a web developer, is www.bbc.co.uk as it is beautifully designed has rich animation and passes w3c validation. I have yet to find another website that does all this. This interaction is powered by a powerful JavaScript library called BBC glow. The BBC have released this library for free so take a look and be amazed at:

Content Management System

Visual thesaurus

Cache blog for faster access

Block all adverts whilst you browse the web

Speed up internet browsing by using google DNS servers

Firstly you must access your router configuration page. To do this first try the 2 links below if these don’t work follow the 3rd link to find out the IP address of your router.

You then need to find out how to change the DNS servers (have a look around – should be in broadband settings or equivalent) if you can’t find it then google change dns dervers followed by the make and model of your router.

To change these settings you usually have to login to your router. To find out your routers default password google router make and model followed by default password.

Then change primary DNS server to 8.8.8.8 and the secondary to 8.8.4.4 this will speed up your day to day browsing but not downloads. For information as to why this speeds it up read on.

Every time your browser visits a new site google.com or yahoo.com it has to Ping a DNS server to find out the physical IP address of the server that the site is being hosted on by using google’s DNS servers you speed up this service (because google is awesomely quick)

this wouldn’t however speed up downloads as the ping has to be done only once per site.

How to speed up your computer by using MSCONFIG

First time how long it takes to start up you computer (including login) and open My computer.

Firstly click on the start orb and type in “msconfig” click on msconfig.exe. You should see this:

Click on startup then go through each one at a time and only leave it enabled if you really want it to start every time you start your PC. Leave your antivirus selected if it is here. I only have wakoopa web tracker, Nvidia display driver and software required for my keyboard. Note that by disabling google update doesn’t prevent google from updating as it automatically starts google update when you open a google product (Chrome, Earth etc.)

Next go to services, if you don’t feel happy playing around with these settings (they are more important) then don’t.

Check the box that says hide all microsoft services

Like before go through each one individually. I have all disabled except Norton 360 and Nvidia display driver. If you use adobe CS3 or CS4 or later this year CS5 then don’t disable flexnet licensing service as this will prevent you from using your adobe products until you enable it again.

Now finally go to boot:

Click on advanced options

And check number of processors and select the number corresponding to your CPU – 4 for quad core 2 for dual core etc.

Click apply then OK and restart your computer

Time it again and post the difference as comments
